Who doesn’t love the look of a beautiful new stone veneer fireplace, however what is also a big plus is the easy care and maintenance that comes with it.
As you know, a weekly dusting of the stone veneer is needed to keep it looking clean but it is inevitable that after just a few short years of fireplace use the soot and grim will become quite noticeable. When this happens a much deeper cleaning process is needed. Although don’t worry, it is actually quite simple and wont cost you much more that few dollars of cleaning supplies and some old fashion elbow grease. A mild liquid detergent and a soft bristle brush is generally all that is needed.
After wetting down the surface of the stone, gently scrub away the smoke and soot and rinse the area with clean water. The stone may appear much darker for the next few days until the stone is completely dry but once that happens your stone fireplace should look fresh and clean like it was when you had it installed.
In some rare cases you may encounter the need to remove a very stubborn stain. It is always best to do a little research, if you know what caused the specific stain and find a solvent that works best for it. However if you do not know then there are some options you can try, although we would recommend trying any harsh cleaning product on a small and inconspicuous area of the stone first to ensure that it does not damage the coloring or texture of the stone veneer before you begin using it.
Goof Off is one such product that has been used to remove graffiti from cement-based products and is one that you could try. Simply apply Goof Off in the same manner as you would use a mild detergent, scrubbing with your soft bristle brush, rinse and let dry.
Another harsh chemical cleaner is a muriatic acid solution (75 percent water, 25 percent acid). This is a very strong chemical cleaning solution designed for cement based products. Use caution when using this product as it can burn your skin and eyes and be sure to wear proper protection by wearing gloves, long sleeves and eye protection during the cleaning process. Use this product in the same way as previously described and ensure that you rinse the veneer stone thoroughly to remove any residual acid solution from your stone fireplace.
